that “just right” venue

You’ve embraced the engagement phase and now it’s time to kick start the planning process with that big first step- selecting the perfect venue.  This can be challenging if you either don’t have a wedding vision in mind just yet or aren’t sure what to look for in a venue.  The key is to narrow down your search as efficiently as possible so that you’re not wasting your time while other couples are busy booking your dream venue!

It’s important to consider the types of venues you are most interested in while sticking to your budget.  A fully furnished ballroom venue may be less expensive than an industrial warehouse or airport that is in need of a wait staff, caterer and possibly, furniture.  Not only is this more pricey, but it could require more work on your end.  Some couples prefer an all-inclusive venue that comes with a staff and decor items such as centerpieces, a welcome sign and card box.  On the other hand, you may want a venue that leaves more room to make it your own while including those additional items as part of your budget.  Regardless of what sounds most appealing to you, start thinking of your type of venue, what it includes and how those elements fit into your budget.

Once you have an idea of your venue type, take note of where the ceremony, cocktail hour and reception take place.  This determines the “flow” of your wedding day between where guests enter and end their night.  For some venues, couples get married in the same space as where the partying and dancing take place afterwards.  If you prefer a change in scenery, ask the venue OR it may not be the right venue for you.

Something else to consider is a weather plan.  While every couple deserves sunshine on their wedding day, the weather often has a mind of its own.  You have to make sure that you love the space according to any plan your venue has to offer.  I recently learned from a fellow wedding planner that we should shift the mindset away from having a “Plan B.”  Instead, make that backup option your Plan A and your first choice the Plan A+.  This way, rain or shine, you can see yourself happily marrying your best friend within the space.

A few last tips and tricks for you…

You want your wedding to feel exclusive.  Some venues allow more than one wedding to take place at the same time.  If you want your wedding to be the only one, you may want to double check that no other brides will be getting married or partying on a nearby dance floor at the same time as you.

There are venues without a bridal suite or space to have hair and makeup done.  If you want a spot to hang with your bridal party and/or soon-to-be partner prior to your “I do’s,” pick a venue that has a bridal suite.

For the comfort of your guests, ensure that there are nearby hotel options.  The last thing people want to do at the end of a long night of celebrating is travel 30+ minutes to their beds!

Finally, make sure your ideal venue has those picture-perfect photo ops.  The photos allow you to remember every aspect of your beautiful wedding day.

At the end of the day, you want your wedding venue to feel like you.  Just remember to keep your wants and needs at heart, including budget, and always come with the right questions.  Happy searching!
